The Mackenzie basin offers some of the most breath taking scenery in New Zealand and with its nice wide roads is a dream to ride around, there are many small towns in which to stop and have a break, refuel you, and your bike. But ofcourse please check the weather first as it can turn nasty very quickly. To ride from Tekapo to Mt Cook takes just over 1 hour if you don't stop to admire the scenery overlooking Lake Pukaki. One of the best rides I have had is from Lake Tekapo to Wanaka, going over Linda's Pass, and I am looking forward to doing that again this summer, this time taking photo's on the way.
